Management Team
Steve Johnson, PE Vice President of Engineering Services
 Since 1991, Mr. Johnson has played a key role in Rii’s overall growth and operations. Having served in a variety of roles throughout his tenure at Rii, he currently serves as Vice President of Engineering Services and provides leadership and management for the engineering, environmental and survey divisions. In addition, he oversees operations for the Midwest branch offices. Mr. Johnson performs management and business development, conducts risk management functions, serves as the company safety manager, and is the project executive for select projects and clients. He has performed planning, program, project and construction management; contract administration, value engineering, and quality assurance for projects ranging up to $630 million. Additionally, Mr. Johnson has a broad range of project experience that includes design and construction of roadways, wastewater and water treatment facilities, high-rise and hotel buildings, municipal utilities, aviation, educational and institutional facilities and infrastructure. He has also developed operations and safety guidelines for various work functions and has conducted in-house training seminars on topics of construction administration, communication, documentation, field documentation, and construction safety.
Robert Hart, LEED AP BD+C Vice President, K-12 Educational Facilities
 Mr. Hart began working for Rii back in 1985 while in high school. As a classmate of the Majidzadeh brothers, he was recruited to work in the laboratory on various jobs before officially joining the firm as an entry level employee fresh out of college. Mr. Hart soon branched out to gain some experience at a national construction management firm before returning in 2000 to manage the Ohio School Facilities Commission’s construction projects. He currently serves as the VP of K-12 Construction Services for the company, overseeing construction management and related disciplines such as facility assessment and master planning, and owner’s representation; as well as supervising Rii’s field and office personnel in this division. In addition, as a LEED Accredited Professional, he is passionate about heading up the firm’s adherence to LEED requirements to ensure all criteria is being met for registered facilities. Since 2000, he has helped manage nearly $500 million in publicly funded projects.
Jim Norden, SET Vice President, Construction Services
 Mr. Norden’s entire career began at Rii back in 1981. Notably, his strong work ethic earned him several promotions where he now serves as Director of Construction Services, currently responsible for the management and administration of all construction services projects for Rii’s Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati offices. As Rii’s longest employed staff member, he is very conscientious about conducting safe professional services, being on top of industry standards, and keeping the client’s best interest at hand. In addition, he is well-versed in all aspects of construction management, administration, and engineering technical support on large complex capital improvement projects and programs. He oversees special inspections, construction administration, materials testing, laboratory analyses, and technical support. This includes the overall inspection and testing on projects as they relate to earthwork, deep foundations, Portland Cement concrete, bituminous concrete, structural steel and fireproofing. In addition, he serves as the firm’s radiation safety officer.
Karl Berghauer, PE Director of Field Operations/Senior Project Manager of Highway Construction Management
 Mr. Berghauer serves as a Director for Rii, managing projects involving geotechnical engineering, pavement management, and construction management services. He joined the firm in 1996 as a staff engineer shortly after he graduated from The Ohio State University. Since that time, he has grown to oversee an entire department, in addition to serving a key role on noteworthy projects such as the Fort Washington Way Reconfiguration for the City of Cincinnati, the Butler Regional Highway for the Butler County Transportation Improvement District and ODOT’s Columbus Crossroads Design-Build project involving the reconstruction of the I-71/670 Interchange. His core beliefs of quality, customer satisfaction and technological advancement have contributed to the firm’s success in growing and sustaining client relationships.
Sam Khorshidi, PE Vice president, transportation engineering
 As Vice President of Transportation Engineering for Rii, Mr. Khorshidi is responsible for leading the entire Civil Engineering Department which has been known for implementing sustainable design solutions and cost containment practices for many clients. He joined the firm in 1992 and has been with the firm his entire career. Though Mr. Khorshidi is experienced in all civil engineering disciplines, he is an expert in roadway, highway and bridge design. His skills are proven from the award-winning Design-Build project in Noble County, which included 4.5 miles of I-77 rehabilitation. His innovative ideas and unique project management skills have enhanced the quality and speed of the design process. In addition, key successful projects have been completed for repeat clients like ODOT, City of Columbus, Ohio Turnpike Commission and County agencies.
Perry Payne, PE, CSI Director of Municipal Engineering
 Recently named Director of Municipal Engineering, Mr. Payne is one of the industry’s most established and committed Senior Project Managers, having more than four decades of knowledge and experience in engineering and construction of wastewater, collection systems, stormwater management, water distribution, site/civil and roadway design projects. He is intimately familiar with the operations of public utility departments and understands the Owner’s perspective, having worked as the City Engineer for the City of Lancaster.
Michelle Eckels, CPG Director of Environmental Services
 Ms. Eckels has been serving as Rii’s Director of Environmental Services for more than a decade. When she began working at Rii back in 1995 as a staff geologist, she took the initiative to broaden the department by researching other services, getting the proper training, and seeking out clients to bring in projects. Over the years, the department expanded and currently provides services such as hazardous materials surveys and abatement oversight; phase I/II environmental site assessments; underground storage tank investigations; construction SWP3 services, and section 401/404 permitting. Ms. Eckels tackles many unusual environmental situations and has the experience to develop and implement an environmental plan in a very short time frame. She assesses quickly, stays calm, and addresses all health/safety concerns and regulatory requirements. In addition, she is intimately familiar with the operations of various public divisions and manages projects as a prime and subcontractor for a variety of owners and A/E consultants.
Jonathan Sterenberg, PE Director of Geotechnical Services
 Mr. Sterenberg began his career in 2001 and proudly serves as one of the firm’s youngest members of the management team, overseeing the Geotechnical Services Division, including Rii’s three laboratories. He is experienced in managing and conducting subsurface investigations and in providing construction observation and materials testing services for nearly every project type in the industry. His primary areas of expertise include shallow and deep foundation design and recommendations, pavement design, slope stability analysis, and retaining wall design. As a former Young Member President of the American Society of Civil Engineering Central Ohio chapter, Mr. Sterenberg now mentors engineers new to the industry, in addition to staying active in the organization.
Dominic Maxwell, CPA Chief Financial Officer
 Mr. Maxwell began working for Rii in 1991 shortly after graduating from OSU; During this time, he worked his way up from a staff accountant to Vice President of Finance, in addition to achieving his MBA in Finance from OSU. Though he took a hiatus to pursue other employment opportunities for several years, he eventually returned to Rii in 2008 where he currently serves as CFO. In this senior management role, he is responsible for managing and controlling all financial-related activities of the firm. This includes, but is not limited to, accounting, finance, strategic planning, contract negotiations, record-keeping, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance. He works very closely with the CEO and President to manage and provide recommendations regarding the strategic and financial risks of the company. Since his return to Rii, the company has experienced exceptional growth and record sales.
Julia Miller, PE Director of Construction Management of Infrastructure Services
 As Director of Construction Management of Infrastructure Services, Ms. Miller brings a broad range of construction management and engineering capabilities. With a specialty in heavy highway construction, she oversees large construction projects for clients like the Ohio Turnpike Commission, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and other transportation and government agencies. Formerly with the Ohio Department of Transportation for 13 years, Ms. Miller is very experienced in all aspects of construction management from preparation of bid packages and estimating, to supervising field personnel, contract administration and more. Her key to a successful project begins with an effective communication plan with all project stakeholders including owners, engineers, designers, code officials, and construction personnel.
Dane Redinger, PE Director of Construction Services
 Beginning his career in 2004 as an intern at Rii, Mr. Redinger advanced through the company to become the Director of the Construction Services department and became the youngest member of the firm’s management team. As the Construction Services Director, Mr. Redinger works with Rii’s three laboratories and oversees the Construction Services department’s corporate operations. Additionally, he acts as project manager for several structural special inspection and construction materials testing projects. His project experience ranges from large commercial projects to highway/roadway projects to industrial projects. Mr. Redinger works closely with Rii’s Geotechnical department on the use of chemical subgrade stabilization methods on projects, and oversees the chemical stabilization mix design projects. His primary areas of expertise include chemical stabilization of subgrade and fill materials, special inspections per the Ohio Building Code, and construction materials testing specific to asphalt, concrete, soil, aggregate and fireproofing. Mr. Redinger participates with the local ASCE and ACI chapters and serves on the Central Ohio ACI Chapter Board of Directors. He also has served as the President of the Central Ohio ACI Chapter. At the national level of ACI, he serves on the ACI 230 Soil-Cement and ACI 311 Inspection of Concrete committees.
